A prototype of a board has been placed on crowdfunding website Kickstarter and has already attracted $154,000 worth of pledges in 24 hours.

The company reportedly behind the hoverboard, Hendo, hopes to attract $250,000 to get the project off the ground.

If the prototype can be developed to a commercial level, Hendo hopes to release the hoverboard in October 2015.

However early reports suggest the company still has a long way to go if anyone is to truly replicate Marty McFly's moves.

According to reports out of the US, the hoverboard only works on a special metallic surface and its battery lasts just a few minutes.

The high-pitched noise echoing from the board has also proved to be a sticking point for some.

There are also concerns the people behind Hendo are using the board as a publicity stunt to show off their technology.

We'll leave it up to you to decide if this board is futuristic or if Hendo need to go back to the drawing board.
