Queensland Police call for video backup with body camera technology

Body cameras are an important piece of new technology for police across the country, but Queensland officers are being forced to cover the cost of buying one themselves.

The NSW Police Force use the technology to ensure both members of the public and the officers themselves are held accountable.

In Queensland, police are demanding to know why they are not supplied with the vital equipment.

"Twelve-year-old children have them when they're riding their bikes, so why can't police have them?" Police Union President Ian Leavers said.

The NSW Police Force provided cameras to their officers as part of a $4 million program, allowing the officers to film in high definition in any light.

Officers in Queensland can only wear them at their own expense.

Vision taken from body cameras will play an important part in the Ethical Standard Command investigation into the shooting a Tewantin yesterday.

One of the officers was wearing a camera he had provided himself.

Queensland Police said they will need to review a range of issues before making a decision.
