New laser treatment takes aim at prostate enlargement

A new laser treatment could reduce trauma and speed up recovery times for men suffering Australia’s most common health complaint – prostate enlargement.

Prostate enlargement is considered one of Australia’s most prevalent problems for men and occurs as the prostate expands and places pressure on the urethra, which can cause urination and bladder problems.

The new Pulse 1-20 laser evaporates the enlarged prostate tissue to increase the urine flow from the bladder through the urethra.

The treatment is quick and relatively painless, and will become increasingly accessible according to Doctor Raji Kooner from St. Vincent’s Private Hospital, Sydney.

“For patients it is a game changer. It’s important I think for patients to be made aware of it”, Dr Kooner said.

Until now prostate enlargement has regularly been treated through transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP), a surgical procedure where part of the prostate gland surrounding and constricting the urethra is removed.

If left untreated, prostate enlargement can lead to bladder blockages and various kidney problems.
