NASA reveals 2km wide asteroid will 'narrowly' miss earth on the weekend

NASA scientists have revealed an asteroid at least two kilometres wide will fly past the earth this weekend, slicing by at the relatively narrow distance of 25 million kilometres away.

Researchers said the celestial object, known as Asteroid 86666 (2000 FL10), was first observed 16 years ago.

However, the asteroid poses no threat to the earth, and is not regarded a hazardous object – although it is hurtling closer to the blue planet than most of its celestial peers.

On August 20, NASA was forced to debunk widespread reports that another incoming asteroid posted a threat.

The organisation said there had been no asteroids or comets observed that would impact the Earth in the foreseeable future, and that all “potentially hazardous asteroids” had a less than 0.01 percent chance of hitting our planet in the next century.
