Iconic Motorola Razr making a comeback

One of the most popular mobile phones from over a decade ago is making a comeback.

Almost 15-years-ago the hottest phone you could have was the Motorola Razr. 

A thin, flip open phone that looked the part and really changed the impression of phones to be stylish and trendy. 

Fast forward to today, and while Motorola is in the smartphone business, they've struggled to get more than a little attention here in Australia.  That all looks set to end in 2020 when their latest innovation hits the market - the Motorola Razr 2019.

This is a flip phone.  But it's a smartphone. It's a folding phone, but it's not a tablet.

Motorola has taken an approach to "foldable displays" that I think is what people want, not just something they can do.

Samsung's Galaxy Fold will always be known as the first folding phone to market, and its unique approach to opening a smartphone turning it into a tablet has merit.

However, what Motorola has done is in my view the ideal adaptation of the foldable display - theirs is a 6.2-inch OLED screen.

Look at your current smartphone.  It's tall, they're getting big.  Now imagine folding the top down so the top edge connects with the bottom edge.  Now you have a phone half the size but the exact same weight.

On the front when "closed" there's also a small 2.7 inch "quick view" screen. 

This means when the phone is closed, it can still serve a purpose.  Who's calling?  What did that message say?  It even works for taking selfies.

From what we've seen it has a rather satisfying click when opening and shutting.

Design-wise, it looks the part.  Keeping the original Razr's "chin" with a wafer-thin upper smartphone.

When open it's a normal smartphone when you want to put it away, it folds simply away to suit.

There's no official announcement about Australian availability, but we'd expect a few of our Telcos to want this one, so keep an eye out in early 2020 for the reincarnation of the Motorola Razr flip phone!
