iPhone victim 'offsided' by Apple response

A Sydney cyclist who suffered third-degree burns when his iPhone exploded is miffed by Apple's "non-human" response to the incident, saying no one at the company even asked how he was.

Thirty-six-year-old Gareth Clear says he had to have skin graft on his thigh after the iPhone 6's lithium battery exploded on Sunday when he fell off his bike and landed on the device in his pocket.

He told the Nine Network's A Current Affair program he'd been in contact with Apple and received a "very technical" response.

"No one asked how are you, how's your body, how's the hole in your leg (from) the phone that's just exploded, how's that," Mr Clear said.

"It was a very technical, driven response which surprised me."

The cyclist added he did not hold a grudge against the company but he felt "a bit offsided" by the "non-human" treatment.

"I'd just been in hospital and I'd just had surgery," he said.

"I was anaesthetised, two days of my life were just taken away."

Mr Clear wants Apple to ensure the same thing doesn't happen to anyone else.

"What we don't realise is there is an extremely powerful lithium battery in these things which under certain duress and circumstances can turn into a mini-bomb," he said.

Comment is being sought from Apple.
