Gran Turismo creator Kazunori Yamauchi on racing in virtual reality

PlayStation's new virtual reality experience has been taken to the next level with a free update for one of its most iconic video games.

The PS VR2 has launched with a stack of new (and old) game titles, but close to none compare to Gran Turismo 7.

9News.com.au sat down with legendary video game creator Kazunori Yamauchi-san, President of Polyphony Digital, who says he knew from the beginning that GT7 would offer a next-generation VR experience.

"At the beginning of development for Gran Turismo 7, we already knew the specs for VR 2 the hardware and the system, so we were able to create it as a native VR title," he told 9News.

Yamauchi-san says developing a seamless VR experience was a challenge on it's own.

"All the data had to be developed with high quality, with low load on the system. We had to make sure that everything was rendered at high speeds," he said.

"So that was a lot of slow and tedious work to get through all of that, make sure nothing causes problems."

We're at a cutting edge point with virtual reality, offering full compatibility for VR racing games, Yamauchi-san says.

"It really does give you a feeling of being in that car and being on a track, you know, elsewhere in the world and driving different cars that are in the game," he said.

"It's really a fun and real experience. So I would really like to see people try it out."

The Gran Turismo 7 PS VR2 update is out now and available at no extra cost if you own the game.
