First person to buy an iPhone 6 in Perth immediately drops it during TV interview

It's always best to stay calm when you're handling something precious - as the first Perth man to buy an iPhone 6 found out this morning.

After waiting in line overnight, Jack Cooksey was the first person through the doors of the Perth Apple Store on Hay Street when it opened today.

He spoke to Channel 9's TODAY Perth outside the store, pulling the box open in his eagerness to show off his new gadget.

However, his excitement was too much and the phone spilled out of the case, landing with an audible smack on the ground.

"I saw it hit the floor, and I was like 'oh, no,no,no,no'," Mr Cooksey told 9NEWS.

"As soon as I knew I'd dropped it I thought someone was going to make a meme or something out of this but I didn't expect it to go as big as it's gone I mean, it's in the UK now."

Mr Cooksey said he's now looking forward to sitting down and tinkering with his new phone.

People queued up overnight outside shops around Australia to get their hands on the new iPhone 6.

Tempers flared among the mob of Apple fans queued outside the Chatswood store in Sydney.

Video of an angry fan yelling at police aired on TODAY this morning.

The man was complaining about queue jumpers before officers moved him to the back of the line.

People travelled from far and wide to be in Sydney, which was the first place in the world to get the new iPhone.

David Rahimi, the first to emerge from the glass doors of the flagship store, said he was "super excited" to pick up the new model.

Rahimi and girlfriend Jasmine Juan, who are from California, had been outside the store from 5:00 am, just three hours before the store opened because they had pre-ordered.

But others, like South Korean Jin Sik Kim, had spent days in front of the store before the doors opened revealing scores of blue T-shirt wearing Apple employees ready to help.

Kim, who had travelled from Seoul specifically to buy the phone, told AFP he had been waiting since Sunday, sleeping out and eating at the nearby McDonalds.

"It's a very unique phone," said Kim who was queueing with six friends and wanting to buy both models. "It's bigger than the previous model."

Both new models have increased screen sizes in what some see as the company catching up to a "phablet" trend combining features of smartphones and tablets.

The iPhone 6 has a screen of 4.7 inches and the 6-Plus is 5.5 inches, reflecting consumers' apparent preference for bigger displays, despite Apple's earlier vow to stick with the traditional size.

Apple's main rival Samsung has long had a range of larger handsets and is due to soon release a new Galaxy Note 4 "phablet."

The California tech giant has said more than four million pre-orders were received in the 24 hours after the sale of the new devices was announced.
