Samsung has announced a new lower cost high-performance smartphone that retails under $1000.

While the best features and highest performance comes in Smartphones priced well above $1,000 or even $2,000, Samsung has today announced their latest iteration of the Galaxy S21, known as the FE or Fan Edition.

It packs a punch with a much more attractive price - starting at $999.

Last year's version of the FE was a big seller for Samsung, with 10 million sold globally and according to Samsung Australia's Garry McGregor it was popular in Australia too.

"The predecessor to this device, the Galaxy S20 FE, was one of our most successful smartphones last year both with consumers and our commercial customers," Mr McGregor said.

"We expect that the Galaxy S21 FE will be equally as popular thanks to its affordability, design and features."

When compared to the "flagship" Galaxy S21 released almost a year ago, you get a larger screen, a larger battery, but just a bit less RAM and the telephoto zoom lens isn't near to the same specifications.

But what you do get is a thin, light-weight smartphone which ticks near to every single box for not just average but performance users.

Firstly its design is class leading, coming in four colours with a soft matte back look.

The screen is 6.4 inches and from our first look this morning at the NFL Stadium that plays host to the Las Vegas Raiders, it's a vivid screen with a hidden fingerprint reader underneath and 120Hz performance.

At $999, from January 11 - this will be a big hit for Samsung, a demonstration that you don't need to spend more than $1000 to get outstanding quality and performance - and it looks great too.

We expect the colours to attract a lot of new buyers, while the performance, capabilities and software tweaks such as allowing recording of front and rear cameras in a video at the same time to be appealing to many.

Orders placed in January will also come with a bonus set of Samsung ear-bud headphones, and demand is expected to be high.
