Three new $2 coins released to commemorate Commonwealth Games

The Royal Australian Mint has released three new $2 coins to commemorate the 2018 Commonwealth Games to be held on the Gold Coast this April.

The limited-edition currency will feature three designs including an emblem of the Australian team, the Gold Coast's emblem and an image of the game's mascot Borobi.

Each of the coins will feature a coloured inner ring, which the Mint says was inspired by "the Games and the dynamic Gold Coast Landscape".

Available through Woolworths Supermarkets tills, the coins will be released one week from today, starting with the Commonwealth Games Emblem coin.

Keen collectors can also pick up the entire collection of commemorative coins, which also features four additional $1 coins, from the Mint's shop or through Woolworths for $15.

Last year, Sports Minister Greg Hunt said commemorative coins of the games were intended to drive excitement and participation from kids watching on.

"Borobi is the perfect mascot not only for the Games and this coin but also for encouraging participation in sport which ultimately brings communities together, improves our health and celebrates Australian culture," said Hunt.

Small Business Minister Michael McCormack said the Mint often released new coins to mark important events in Australia's history.

"The Royal Australian Mint plays an important role in commemorating significant national events and Borobi on a coin is a fun way to celebrate and remember the Commonwealth Games for years to come," said McCormack.

The 2018 Commonwealth Games mascot Borobi is a blue koala who wears board shorts and has "a passion for surfing".

Borobi was selected as mascot for the games after being entered into a design competition by his creator, Brisbane school teacher Merrilyn Krohn.

The Commonwealth Games officially kick off on April 4.
