All sectors red as ASX opens lower

The Australian share market has opened lower as every sector started the day in the red.

The benchmark S&P/ASX200 index was down 53.3 points, or 0.81 per cent, to 6,491.7 points at 1015 AEST on Wednesday, while the broader All Ordinaries was down 47.9 points, or 0.72 per cent, to 6,579.5 points.

The consumer staple, industrial, utilities and property trusts sectors fell more 1.0 per cent after the first 15 minutes of trading.

Mining giant BHP was down 1.40 per cent to $35.79, Rio Tinto was down 0.92 per cent to $85.04 and Fortescue Metals was down 1.52 per cent to $7.465.

The big four banks - ANZ , Commonwealth, NAB and Westpac - were down between 0.54 per cent and 1.03 per cent.

On Wall Street overnight, the Dow Jones Industrial Average finished down 0.66 per cent, the S&P 500 was down 0.79 per cent and the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite was down 0.68 per cent.

The Aussie dollar is buying 67.76 US cents from 67.83 US cents on Tuesday.
