After launching six years ago, the Apple Watch is getting its biggest update yet with Apple announcing at a virtual event this morning the latest generation — the Apple Watch Series 7.

This new generation features an all-new screen design which pushes the actual digital screen further toward the edges, allowing for larger touch buttons on screens as well as a full keyboard option when composing text.

There's no radical change to the overall design style of the Apple Watch face though, despite rumours it would change.

The watch face is larger, with a border of just 1.7mm stretching the watch face to be bigger than ever, up from 40 and 44mm on the more recent model Apple Watches and far larger than the original 38 and 42mm sizes. The screen is also 70 per cent brighter.

Health and fitness are still at the core of Apple's approach to the smartwatch market, with the heart rate, blood oxygen and ECG features which have been industry leading in many ways.

New features for Apple Watch include support for cycling, including fall detection for cyclist — given the popularity of cycling, both on-road and off, this will be a huge hit.
