Would you give couriers access to your home to drop off packages? Amazon hopes so

Amazon is hoping you'll let a stranger inside your home while you're away to drop off your packages.

Amazon announced today it is launching a services called Amazon Key next month which will let its Amazon Prime allow their front doors to be unlocked when they're not home so packages can be left inside for them.

The proposal drew plenty of humorous reactions on social media, as well as concerns about safety or delivery employees being mistaken for intruders.

Amazon said the drivers would be well-vetted, while one expert said the company has built up trust with customers and younger customers were more likely to try it out.

Consumers are required to buy a camera sold exclusively by Amazon in order participate in the new service - a purchase which will cost them US$119. This converts to A$154, but an official Australian price tag has not been announced. 

Customers who want to use the service will also need a Wi-Fi-connected lock.

When the delivery person shows up, Amazon insists they will knock first to make sure no one is home. Before gaining independent entry they will scan the package and Amazon will make sure they are at the right home and unlock the door.

No codes or keys are needed, and the indoor camera will record the in-home delivery. The Amazon Cloud Cam lets users watch a livestream or recorded video of the transaction once it's complete for peace of mind. 

Amazon.com Inc. said in-home delivery will be available November 8 in 37 cities across the US, but hopes to roll it out further in the near future.
