Melbourne Zoo's boisterous new baby elephant has plenty to trumpet about - he has a new name.

The new calf has been named Man Jai, which means "confident" in Thai.

Born at an impressive 131kg, Man Jai joins mother Dokkoon and big sister Mali at the zoo.

A special naming celebration was held at Melbourne Zoo on Saturday.

The elephant's name was chosen by zoo members as part of an online poll.

Other possible options for the lively zoo addition included Sai, meaning tropical tree or Look Nam, which means "likes water".

This is the fourth birth at Melbourne Zoo since the arrival of three young elephants from Thailand in 2006.

Visitors to the elephant enclosure will be able to learn about the threats to the Asian elephants natural habitat and what can be done to protect them in the wild.
