Zombies under the streets of New York

The people behind the hit US zombie series The Walking Dead have come up with a terrifying way of promoting its forthcoming season.

Hidden beneath the footpath on a New York street, a bunch of "walkers" lay in wait for pedestrians walking by in their own world.

From the surfaces it would appear like any grate over a drain.

But as they get closer the drain reveals a subterranean surprise.

The cold, dead hands of screaming zombies pop out of the out from the ground, causing pedestrians to jump in terror at the sight of the walking dead.

This gripping piece of promotion was organised to promote the new season of AMC's post-zombie apocalypse series which starts this weekend.
