A young father has been identified as the inmate brutally killed at Victoria’s largest prison last night.

Hassan Jeng, 23, was allegedly stabbed to death by a fellow prisoner about 7pm at Port Phillip Jail, in Truganina.

Paramedics attempted to save Jeng, but he died at the scene.

His partner Agnes Tontoe spoke exclusively to 9NEWS today, and said the news has torn her apart.

“I’m so young to be a widow,” she said.

“I don’t know why they have to end his life like this. I don’t know why they have to kill him like this.”

9NEWS understands Jeng had only been in the privately-run jail for a few months, and his offences were not of a serious nature.

His family said he had a job in construction, and was a hard worker.

Hassan leaves behind three children with Ms Tontoe- Samba, David and Jamal- all aged under 5.

“They love their daddy so much,” their mother said.

“His heart was so nice. He was so humble to everybody, he respected everybody, he loved everybody.

Several prisoners were detained within the jail following Jeng’s death.

The Homicide Squad is now leading the ongoing investigation.
