Young man drowns while bodyboarding off Fingal Head

A young man has drowned while bodyboarding near rocks at Fingal Head, in northern New South Wales.

Emergency services were called to Fingal Headland Point just after 11.30am today following reports a 20-year-old had become distressed in the water.

The man was bodyboarding when he lost his board and had attempted to climb on to rocks, police were told.

Police and lifesavers were involved in the search, and found the body just after 1.30pm.

The man's friends raised the alarm and his family were there to witness his body being pulled from the water.

Paramedics commenced CPR however the man could not be revived.

It is believed the man hit his head as he slipped from the rocks and he subsequently drowned. 

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
