‘Yes’ vote winning by millions, new data reveals

Things are looking up for same-sex couples in Australia with new research revealing the ‘yes’ vote is charging ahead in the national postal survey.

The latest Newspoll published in The Australian this morning shows the ‘Yes’ campaign is leading the race by millions, with 59 percent of participants casting a ‘yes’ vote.

The ‘No’ campaign have garnered 38 percent of the vote.

New statistic about the survey released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics yesterday revealed that so far 10.8 million Australians have returned their ballots, making up around 67.5 percent of eligible voters.

Anyone who has not received their ballot can request a replacement up until 6pm this Friday, October 20.

The data comes as Labor throws its weight behind a private bill drafted by a Liberal senator in the case that the same-sex marriage survey delivers a majority yes vote.

West Australian senator Dean Smith's bill allows for the change to marriage laws while also protecting religious freedoms.

The Labor caucus yesterday voted to allow a conscience vote on the bill - which is believed to have the best chance of passing parliament - should the survey return a positive result.

Results of the survey are expected to be released on November 15.
