Victorian year 10 students would have to complete a compulsory defensive driving course to get their license if Labor won the state election.

Opposition leader Daniel Andrews outlined the new policy today while visiting a driver school in Melbourne’s east.

About $24.4 million would be spent on the project and each year 10 student would receive a half-day defensive driving course, according to Labor.

“We need make sure our youngest drivers have the skills they need, the attitude and the understanding to be safer drivers,” Mr Andrews said.

Students and instructors have welcomed the proposed move.
