A British schoolgirl who has the same name as the librarian who blew the whistle on Frances Abbott's fashion school scholarship has been bombarded with messages of support on Twitter.

Sydneysider Freya Newman, 21, made headlines earlier this year when she was exposed as the Whitehouse Institute of Design employee who had leaked details of a $60,000 scholarship awarded to Prime Minister Tony Abbott's daughter.

The revelation caused an immediate negative backlash against both Abbotts on social media and culminated in Ms Newman pleading guilty to leaking restricted data earlier this month.

As Sydney's Freya Newman awaits sentencing for the crime a British schoolgirl who shares the same name has received hundreds of messages of support, including a "Thank You" from Greens leader Christine Milne.

"Good luck to @freyanewman today who has done our public understanding of contemporary AUS politics a service," Twitter user Wendy Bacon wrote to the British Ms Newman yesterday.

Ms Newman thanked her accidental supporters but said she was not the person who deserved their praise.

"hi im sorry but you've got the wrong freya newman, would love if u could RT this cus the notifications are crashing my phone," the Brit wrote.

Some Twitter users wished her the best anyway.

"hey I know you aren't the whistleblower we're all supporting but I hope you have a nice day anyway," Mason McCann wrote.
