Worthington's Gallipoli to be filmed in SA

Sam Worthington is to star in a Gallipoli mini-series to be filmed in South Australia ahead of the Anzac centenary next year.

Worthington, who will also be executive producer, made a quick visit to Adelaide on Thursday when he and Premier Jay Weatherill spoke to the media.

Titled Deadline Gallipoli, the series will tell the story of a group of war correspondents, including Sir Keith Murdoch, and how they triggered the decision to end the Gallipoli campaign.

It explores their relationships with the young soldiers sent to Gallipoli, their growing realisation that British command was unprepared for the campaign and their efforts to get their uncensored stories out.

"We wanted to have a different way of looking at this moment in our history, that defined us as a nation to some respect," Worthington said.

The SA government will contribute $618,000 to the project, which will provide about 1300 jobs, and be based at Adelaide's film studios at Glenside.

"This facility alone is up there with some of the best I have seen in the world," Worthington said.

In August he visited Gallipoli and found the typography and heat matched the conditions in South Australia.

Anzac Cove scenes will be shot at the state's first legal nudist beach at Maslin, in the Fleurieu Peninsula.

Filming will begin in mid-2014 and the show will air on Foxtel in 2015.

The premier referred to the favourable infrastructure and talent available in SA for the project.

"We are very proud that we have been chosen to film what I think will be a very important contribution to the 100th commemoration of the events of World War One," he said.

Worthington was asked if there was a role in the project for his girlfriend Lara Bingle.

"I am not in a position to answer that question," he said.

"I think we are here to discuss the mini-series, not my private life."
