Emergency services carried out a delicate rescue operation to save a man trapped in a drill rig dangling over a quarry cliff in Brisbane's north-west this morning.

Fire crews and other rescue workers set up vertical lines to free the worker, after the rig rolled down a hill at Keperra.

The 90-minute operation culminated in a rescue worker abseiling over the rig to connect the worker to a rope and reel him to safety.

Colleagues hugged the 33-year-old man after he was saved.

"He was shaken, but he was actually quite calm and collected," a Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokesman said.

The Department of Mines and a local crane company will now try to rescue the rig from its precarious position at the granite quarry.

Queensland Workplace Health and Safety officers will also investigate the accident.
