Work has begun on a security fence around Parliament House in Canberra.

Senate President Stephen Parry told a parliamentary committee on Monday the fence - which is part of a $126.7 million security upgrade - had been designed to maximise public access while minimising its visual impact.

Senator Parry said security cameras and other surveillance technology would also be upgraded.

The public would still be able to access the roof of Parliament House via an internal lift.

"We have balanced the security of the building with the continued open access to visitors," he said.
