'Wonder girl' beats tumour with robotic surgery

Breakthrough robotic surgery has been used to help a six-year-old girl with an incurable head tumour.

Freyja Christiansen first had immunotherapy last year to shrink the size of the main tumour.

As a result, the tumour was less metabolically active but still present and needed to be removed.

“We looked all over the world, looking, asking, begging, trying to do anything to find a solution,” Freyja’s mother, Liz, told 9NEWS.

Doctors from the Boston Children’s Hospital recommended Freyja to head and neck surgeon Ben Dixon, from the Epworth Hospital in Melbourne’s Richmond.

Thankfully, Dr Dixon agreed to take on the intricate case.

“Once we got in there doing the surgery, it was pretty straight forward,” he said.

Before the first surgery, Frejya took a special phone call from one of her heroes - actress Gal Gadot, who played the fierce Wonder Woman in the latest screen adaptation of the DC Comics icon.

Gadot wished the six-year-old “good luck” and told her to be brave.

Ms Christiansen today said within six weeks of the consultation, her brave daughter’s tumours are gone.

“It’s a miracle,” she said.

Freyja said she’s now looking forward to swimming again and riding horses.
