A ferocious house fire in Adelaide's southern suburbs has claimed the life of a 63-year-old woman.

Emergency services were called to the scene just after 3am.

According to witnesses, the fire broke out quickly, trapping the woman inside.

"I didn't think those flames were ever going to go out," witness Maxine Rogers said.

More than two dozen firefighters battled to control the fierce blaze, and prevented it from spreading to neighbouring homes. 

It was only after the fire was extinguished that emergency services workers discovered the body of the 63-year-old woman.

"It's really sad... I didn't even think anyone was home because we hadn't seen her in ages, but then to find out someone was actually inside is horrible," witness Nakisha said.

Fire cause investigators and detectives are still trying to determine how the fire started.

The damage to the home is estimated to be half a million dollars.

Police will prepare a report for the coroner.
