A woman is fighting for life after being pulled unconscious from the water at a Sydney beach.

Emergency services were called to South Cronulla Beach about 7pm yesterday after a woman was reportedly in trouble in the water.

The 20-year-old woman was pulled unresponsive from the beach and was treated by paramedics at the scene.

She was taken to St George Hospital in a critical condition where she remains this morning.

A second woman who also got into trouble in the water was also rescued and remains in a stable condition.

NSW Lifesavers have saved more than eight people an hour over the past three days.

The number of rescues has sparked a warning from authorities about water safety.

"People are out and about and enjoying the best that our state has to offer but we just need to make sure we do it safely," premier Dominic Perrottet said.
