Woman killed as car crashes into water pipes

A 70-year-old woman has become the fourth person in four days to die on the New South Wales Central Coast roads.

A vehicle veered off the road near Avoca Drive, Erina, and crashed into some water pipes at about 10am today,

The woman, a front-seat passenger, was killed.

The male driver was trapped in the car for half an hour before he was able to be extracted.

He was airlifted to a Sydney hospital in critical condition.

The accident comes just over a week after Operation Safe Arrival concluded in NSW, with a bloody road toll darkening the holiday period.

Between 12.01am on December 15 and 11.59pm on January 1, with police out in force to keep dangerous holiday driving in check, 28 people were killed on NSW roads.

A further 479 were injured, while police issues a total of nearly 50,000 infringements.

Police are calling for witnesses to the crash to come forward.
