A 49-year-old woman has blown more than six times the legal limit after being pulled over near a school area on the NSW north coast, police say.

She returned an alleged reading of 0.308 on Wednesday afternoon at the Raymond Terrace police station, north of Newcastle, after being stopped by an off duty police officer at Tea Gardens.

The woman was charged with high-range PCA and possessing a prohibited drug after police accused her of carrying a small amount of cannabis.

"Members of the public raised the alarm after seeing the alleged dangerous driving of the Nissan (Pathfinder)," Assistant Commissioner John Hartley said.

"The area is near a school and there were numerous schoolchildren walking and riding bicycles."
