Teenage son charged over Queensland mum's stabbing

A woman is seriously injured and her teenage is son facing attempted murder charges after she was stabbed multiple times at her central Queensland home.

Police say they discovered the 36-year-old at the home in Rockhampton on Tuesday night with life-threatening head and chest injuries.

Officers gave the woman first aid until paramedics arrived and she was taken to Rockhampton Base Hospital.

Detective Inspector Darrin Shadlow said the woman had been stabbed in the chest and back at least 10 times.

"It was quite a horrific scene ... quite a considerable amount of blood had been lost by the victim," Det Insp Shadlow told reporters.

He said the son did not live at the property with the woman.

The hospital updated the woman's condition as serious but stable on Wednesday.

Police say the woman's 17-year-old son confronted them when they arrived at the property with a knife in his hand.

He surrendered when police demanded he drop the weapon and has also been taken to hospital and treated for an injured hand.

He's been charged with attempted murder and is under police guard at the hospital.

The teen will be dealt with under the provisions of the Youth Justice Act.
