A woman has made a desperate attempt to save herself from a man who was just released on bail after he allegedly climbed into a Sydney apartment block and attempted to rob her.

The 30-year-old was filmed trying to escape the man after she was allegedly choked and begging for help.

David el Hassan, 28, is accused of breaking into the property on Allen Street, Harris Park, in the city's west, just after 9am today in an attempted robbery.

He allegedly robbed and assaulted a 45-year-old woman on the same street an hour earlier.

Neighbours of the 30-year-old could hear her yelling "help me" as they called the police.

"I was feeding my baby and was hearing 'help me, help me, help me'," witness Rita Sundayjereniah told 9News.

The woman refused to let el Hassan go before he was arrested and charged.

"She's really brave, but at the same time is it really worth your life, whatever possessions he stole," neighbour Christian Albinowski said.

"She was holding onto him, would not let go of him, real hero."

The court heard el Hassan had been released from prison in July. He did not make an attempt to explain the alleged incidents, but instead begged for a chance to call his mother.
