Tent collapses on TODAY hosts during live coverage from Canberra

TODAY Show hosts Karl Stefanovic and Lisa Wilkinson had a spill of their own in Canberra this morning when the tent they were filming under collapsed on Wilkinson's head live on air.

Reporting on the leadership spill and Malcolm Turnbull’s imminent swearing in as Prime Minister, Wilkinson appeared to be struggling to remain composed in the heavy wind before the tent came down on her head.

"Wow it's windy here," Wilkinson said, almost blown off her seat before a centre pole from the structure came down on her head.

Stefanovic struggled to pull the structure away from her as the show cut back to the Sydney studio.

"It's alright Lisa I'm gonna save you," Stefanovic could be heard saying as the camera cut away.

"Alright we're going to take over from there while they sort out the winds of change sweeping through the nation's capital right now.

The show cut to political reporter Lauren Gianoli before returning to the hosts outside Parliament House, who had managed to stabilise the tent with the help of the crew.

"I don't know why you cut away from us in the first place," Stefanovic joked. "I mean it was just the most interesting thing that's happened all morning is this thing falling down on Lisa's poor old head."

“And don’t take this as a metaphor for Australia’s future at all people,” Wilkinson said.
