Man 'behind machete attack' arrested at train station

A man has been arrested at a train station after allegedly attacking another with a machete at a Melbourne boarding house.

Emergency services were called to the property at Nelson Place, Williamstown, following reports of a fight involving two men just after 12pm.

"Upon police gaining entry, it was established that the male had been seriously assaulted on the top floor of the premises," Detective Senior Sergeant Michael Bennett said.

A 28-year-old man was found with non-life threatening wounds to his head and forearm, believed to be from a machete.

He has been taken to hospital.

A 37-year-old man allegedly fled the property after the attack, before being arrested by police at Williamstown Station, about 400 metres away.

It is suspected he dumped the weapon somewhere along the way to the station.

He remains in custody, with charges yet to be laid.

"He's currently being interviewed, and is assisting us with our enquiries," Det Snr Sgt Bennett said.

Police said the men are known to each other, and residents confirmed to 9NEWS the pair had gotten into arguments in the past.

It's understood the victim moved into the residence three months ago.
