Wild winds gusting 115km/h lash Victoria

Damaging winds are whipping large parts of Victoria today, with gusts of more than 100km/h recorded in the state’s Alpine regions.

A severe weather warning is in place for south west and north eastern districts of the state, along with parts of the coast, with already moderate wind speeds increasing as a strong cold front passes.

Gusts of up to 100km/h expected to impact areas including Omeo, Bright, Warrnambool, Portland and Wonthaggi for the remainder of the day into tomorrow, according to the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM).

Conditions will be even more intense in Alpine areas, with 120km/h gusts expected.

A gust of 115km/hr was clocked at Mount Buller, in the states north east, was recorded at 4.40 this morning.

Mount Hotham Airport clocked gusts of 107km/h just after 7.30am.

The State Emergency Service (SES) received 46 requests for assistance in 12 hours with most of the calls for help regarding downed trees and branches.

An earlier severe weather warning for central and north central districts, which included Melbourne, was earlier cancelled.
