Winds of up to 90km/h and heavy rain have lashed Sydney today, as the city prepares for another overcast weekend.

The Bureau of Meteorology issued a severe weather warning for Sydney, the Hunter and Illawarra regions after a low pressure system developed offshore over the Tasman Sea.

Rain is now clearing over the NSW capital, but a damaging winds warning remains in place with gusts of up to 90km/h expected.

There is the possibility of thunderstorms and flash-flooding in some areas, particularly the Illawarra south of Sydney.

The winds also turned Sydney Harbour choppy, leaving ferry commuters enduring a bumpy ride.

Up to 40mm of rain was predicted to hit on Sydney today, with extra falls tomorrow before the weather begins to clear on Sunday.
