Why there could be some relief for Sydney home buyers

House hunters can heave a small sigh of relief with new research revealing the number of homes on the market in Sydney has risen over the last four years.

Figures obtained by 9NEWS show 21,331 properties have been advertised for sale this financial year, surging 13 percent.

"There are a lot of properties coming on to the market at this stage due to a lot of investors and developers coming into the area," Marco Sarkis from Laing & Simmons told 9NEWS.

Back in 2014, approximately 18,891 homes were on the market, before a dip to 17,782 the following year.  In 2016, the number rose to 19,087, and increased into 2017.

"That's really good news for purchasers who are looking to try and buy during the winter period," Damien Cooley from Cooley Auctions told 9NEWS.

But while the figures may be promising, for many, the housing market remains unaffordable. 

"It's too hot. Too hot for young families to get into,” one prospective buyer said.  

"I've been looking for three years. I've been following it for three years, and yeah it's just amazing,” another added.

While the numbers remain significantly lower than normal, Mr Cooley said the overall figures are on the rise and are expected to continue into spring.

"There is no question that we're expecting a lot more property to hit the market, in September, October and November,” he said.
