American playwright Edward Albee has died aged 88 in New York.

Albee’s assistant announced today the writer had died of an undisclosed cause at his home in Long Island, New York, BBC News reported.

He penned three Pulitzer Prize winning plays throughout his illustrious career.

His most famous work, ‘Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?’, spawned a 1966 film starring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton.

Albee received a Tony award for lifetime achievement in 2005.
