Which bread is best? The results are in

There are hundreds of bread ranges on the market, but which should you choose?

Consumer comparison group Canstar Blue asked 3000 households to cast their vote on which was their favourite loaf.

“Texture and taste are actually the number one things effecting customer satisfaction when they're buying their bread,” Megan Doyle from Canstar Blue said.

In the wholemeal category, Tip Top, Wonder White and Aldi's Bakers Life got four stars.

With shoppers prepared to pay for a premium brand - the clear winner Helga's, at $4 a loaf.

But in multigrain breads, Aldi's Baker's Life, one of the cheapest at $1.35, took out the top award for overall satisfaction.

“ALDI's bread actually got five stars in the multi-grain sector for overall satisfaction this year and also got five stars for value for money in white and whole meal,” Ms Doyle said.

Lovers of white bread also liked Tip Top, giving it four stars but voted  Wonder White, at $3 a loaf, their favourite.

“Nearly two thirds are telling us they actually buy the same brand white bread every time they do shopping,” Ms Doyle says.

“And nearly 30 percent of them are buying them for a nutritional benefit.”

Dietitians said to get the most out of your bread, look for varieties with more than five grams of fibre per 100 grams.

For example, Coles white bread has only 2.7 grams of fibre per 100 grams - while in the mid-range there's Woolworth's multigrain (5.2g) and ALDI's whole meal bread (6.5 g).

Helga's wholemeal and seed has the most, 8.1 grams - the best of the whites - Wonder bread with 7.5 grams per 100.

Brisbane Dietitian, from New Life Nutrition, Julie Masci said bread is a great source of fibre with a good mix of both soluble and insoluble fibre which is important for digestive health.

“Ideally where possible if you can be choosing a bread that is whole meal and then has seeds in it you get a nice mix of fibre and as a result of that it has a lot more health benefits,” she said.

“The goal for an adult per day is to aim for about 30 grams of dietary fibre.”
