Where the parties stand on school funding

HOW SCHOOLS FUNDING ADDS UP

* The coalition has promised an extra $1.2 billion for schools from 2018 to 2020

* This covers the final two years of the Gonski deal plus an extra year, but doesn't reach the same funding level

* It will now increase funding each year by 3.6 per cent - in line with real education costs - instead of the lower consumer price index

* The cash will be tied to measures to improve literacy and numeracy, teacher quality, and maths and science outcomes

* Labor has promised schools the $4.5 billion of the final two years of Gonski funding (2018 and 2019) if elected

* Previously the coalition said it would negotiate with states in 2017 for a new four-year funding deal to start in 2018
