A teenager suspected of lighting a number of small scrub fires in Melbourne's Jells Park has been arrested.

The 19-year-old Mulgrave man was arrested in Jells Park in Wheelers Hill shortly after Emergency Services were called to the Park just after 12.30pm

More than 30 firefighters were deployed to battle the fires and have now brought the small blazes under control.

The Mulgrave man is currently being interviewed by police.

The fires broke out on what has been Melbourne's warmest day since April 20, with the temperature reaching over 29 degrees.

A Metropolitan Fire Brigade spokesperson said water from the park's lake was being used to fight the fires.

"There are currently a number of small fires around the lake as well larger fires in the south east and north west corners of the lake area," a spokesperson said.

"These fires are yet to be contained."

Police have conducted a partial evacuation of Jells Park and have urged the public to stay clear.
