What the states think of changing the GST

WHAT AUSTRALIA'S LEADERS THINK ABOUT TURNBULL'S GST PLAN

* WA's Colin Barnett is delighted and says it will give the state long-term security and stability in revenue. "We will then be in a position also to stabilise and reduce state debt, so that gives me great confidence that we can continue all the programs and services of the state government."

* SA's Jay Weatherill: "Numerous expert studies have shown the existing method of distributing GST is the fairest and most efficient."

* NSW premier Mike Baird, via a spokesman, "will wait to see the full details and looks forward to discussing these matters at the next COAG meeting".

* Queensland's Annastacia Palaszczuk accused Malcolm Turnbull of making policy on the run. "Once again, (he wants) to give a handout to Western Australia which I think is absolutely discriminatory."

* Tasmanian Labor Opposition Leader Bryan Green: "Malcolm Turnbull is planning to give more to WA and that means Tasmania will be the loser."

* Federal shadow treasurer Chris Bowen: "Malcolm Turnbull is taking the Australian people for mugs if he thinks they've forgotten his form on federalism and state income taxes. He's got no credibility on federalism and tax and now he says he's got an idea to change the GST distribution where no one loses and everyone wins."
