Debbie the cyclone cockatoo dies

Debbie, the cockatoo who lost her feathers during the cyclone that lashed Far North Queensland on Tuesday, has died.

The bird, who was named after the devastating ex-Tropical Cyclone, made headlines after being photographed by Townsville Bulletin photographer Alix Sweeney.

Debbie, who was found dead in her box this morning, was buried in the same forest where Ms Sweeney located her on Tuesday, The Townsville Bulletin reports.

Ms Sweeney, who was at the heart of the Category 4 cyclone in Airlie Beach, wrapped the cockatoo in a towel and took her back to the safety of the hotel.

"He just looked so sad," she told 9NEWS.

"It was not a good cyclone to be in. It was actually the worst I’ve ever been in," Ms Sweeney said.
