Whales frolic off Bondi Beach

A pod of whales has been spotted frolicking off Bondi Beach this morning.

The whales were seen breaking the ocean surface as they came up for air, swimming close to the headlands of some of Australia's most iconic beaches.

It's a reminder that it's peak whale-watching time, with tens of thousands set to make their way along the Australian coast in coming months.

From May to November, up to 40,000 whales, mostly including humpbacks and southern rights, migrate up the coast to make for the warmer waters of the Pacific.

Whale watchers both amateur and professional will be on alert, particularly after rescue workers had to save a humpback off the Gold Coast this morning.

The whale was entangled in the shark nets off Mermaid Beach overnight, with the rescue taking place at first light this morning.

The humpback was unharmed and swam off after it was freed.
