An urgent rescue has freed a whale that became tangled in shark nets off the Gold Coast.

The whale became stuck off Kirra, with Sea World rescuers and authorities swiftly on the scene.

It was a delicate operation but rescuers managed to get the whale loose and it swam away unharmed.

It's the third whale this week to run afoul of shark nets in Queensland's south-east, heating up the debate over whether the nets should be used at all.

Critics have pointed out what a danger they pose, particularly through whale migration season.
