Wet week ahead for parts of Sydney and Melbourne

A miserable week ahead looms for Sydney and Melbourne with significant rain to combine with winter’s chilly temperatures across parts of the states by tomorrow afternoon.

Maximum temperatures in both states are expected to remain below 20°C as heavy rains and strong winds batter the east coast.

Weatherzone meteorologist Tristan Meyers told nine.com.au Sydney could expect its heaviest rainfall by Thursday.

"On Wednesday it is looking like we will see a low pressure system develop which will start sending showers to Sydney probably sometime in the afternoon and evening," he said.

"Thursday and Friday are at risk of developing heavy showers throughout the day but generally speaking the majority of showers are looking to clear sometime on Saturday.

"Temperatures will remain average at around 16°C on Tuesday and 19°C on Thursday."

Rain is also expected to develop later today in Melbourne dropping maximum temperatures down to 12°C.

"Showers will increase tomorrow…with a chance of isolated rainfall as high as 10mm in some areas," Meyers said.

"We are looking at rain each day this week in Melbourne."
