Doctors save child from lifelong paralysis after rare condition left him unable to walk within a week
The mother of a toddler got the scare of her life when her normally healthy boy became unable to walk in the space of one week.
Earlier this year, four-year-old James could barely put one foot in front of the other.
His condition came on suddenly and within a week, he was unable to walk.

His mother Li brought him to the Children's Hospital at Westmead where he underwent tests and MRIs.
Under the care of the doctors and scientists at the Kids Neuroscience Centre, James was diagnosed with a rare type of spinal and brain inflammation
But thanks to the groundbreaking work from a team of doctors, nurses, scientists and clinicians from The Children's Hospital at Westmead, he's now moving faster than ever.

"As part of our hospital, we have some research laboratories and scientists that have made some world discoveries finding the cause of spinal inflammation," Professor Russel Dale, Clinical Director of the Kid Neuroscience Centre said.
Without their experience, James would have been paralysed.

Instead, once diagnosed and treated, James began to walk within three days and run within two.
While he will still have to take medication to manage his condition, James will be otherwise able to live a normal and active life.
ProfessorDale said the ability to help James was an "incredibly rewarding" experience.
