Frenzied stabbing in Westfield was 'over woman'

A frenzied stabbing which left a man dead in the cosmetics section of a Myer store in Western Sydney was sparked by an argument over a woman, police will allege.

Kazem Mohamadi Payam, 35, has been charged with attacking another man, 40, in front of a horrified public holiday crowd which included children in the middle of Westfield Parramatta shopping centre yesterday morning.

Mr Payam did not apply for bail but was formally refused before Parramatta Local Court but his lawyer, Georgina Namat, said her client "will be defending the charge".

Police will allege Iranian-born Mr Payam, who first came to Australia after being granted a protection visa in 2010, carried out the attack after arguing with the other man about a woman. 

His lawyer said it is likely her client would apply for bail when he next appeared on July 24.
