Heavy rain saw the evacuation of Westfield Bondi Junction after part of the roof collapsed.

NSW Ambulance said one person was assessed at the scene, after they were called around 1.30pm.

Shoppers watched in shock as a large piece of plasterboard fell several storeys from the ceiling of the shopping centre and landed on the ground level near Zara around 1.45pm (AEDT).

"I left to go do some Christmas shopping and a whole bunch of people were watching the hail fall down. I turned around and the rain was coming through, literally raining inside," said Liz Wilson, who witnessed the incident.

She said that two minutes after the piece of roof fell, evacuation sirens began blaring through the shopping centre.

Heavy rain also caused flooding and submerged cars, with Syd Enfield Drive closed in both directions for much of the afternoon.

Traffic remains sluggish around the area due to minor flooding.

There have also been reports of water leaking in the Bondi Junction car park.
