A 15-year-old girl has allegedly been sexually assaulted on Rottnest Island, off the coast of Western Australia.

The alleged sexual assault occurred between 8.30pm and 11pm on Saturday, in a toilet block.

A 14-year-old boy was arrested, assisted with inquiries, and was then released pending further investigation.

Police said the offender was known to her.

Sex crime squad detectives yesterday combed the toilet block where the alleged assault is claimed to have taken place.

Today the Rottnest Island Authority reassured people at the popular holiday destination it was a safe place to be.

"There is an increased presences of rangers, security and police to cater for the increased visitor numbers," the authority said.

West Australian Premier Roger Cook echoed the sentiment.

"Rottnest remains a safe place to holiday - it's one of the great, iconic family destinations for the Christmas holidays and I hope all families feel like they can go there," he said.
