West Australians urged to go local when buying their Christmas ham

Local pork producers are urging all West Australian to put some pork on their fork and buy local this year.

High grain prices due to the drought on the east coast and high demand from China have hit local farmers hard.

The industry is losing around $600,000 a week and farmers believe the price per pig is at a record low.

A new campaign called "Ham Stand" was launched to remind West Australians that local really the best.

“What we really need is every single person in Western Australia to look to ask the question and if you don't get the answers from the big supermarkets, go to your local deli, go to your local butcher,” WA pork producer Graeme Dent said.

“It's a small industry, we’ve all stuck together but it hasn't been a lot of fun in the past 12 months trying to move product,” he said.
