Ceiling collapses in a home while the family was asleep inside

A family of six in Western Australia escaped serious injury when their ceiling collapsed just centimetres from where they were sleeping.

The collapse happened about 10pm on Monday in the Jane Brook home while the Wirth family were asleep inside.

"I started screaming and ran down the hallway to my mum's room," Laylah Wirth said.

"As soon as I heard it crush, I quickly put my head under the blanket," Jude Wirth said.

The family said couches, computers, TVs, books, photos, and a lot of other valuables were lost.

"Everything just came down," Chris Allen, who also lived in the house, said.

Laylah said she helped make sure everyone was safe.

"Me and my mum have got the two boys out the front because they're both very asthmatic so like to breath that in it's very hard."

The family said they had been renting the property for almost five years and had noticed problems starting to crop up about three months in.

"There have been requests to have the ceiling repaired because it's been slowly sort of sinking in numerous areas and they've been ignored," Chris said.

They have been camping out in swags on the front lawn and staying with friends until they can find another place to stay.
